All the books I read in July and what I thought of them

In July I read 13 books because I didn't know what else to do with myself! I hate summer. Such a terrible season. I don't have a heat tolerance. I don't even know what that is. I hate the sun. I miss my sweaters, even the ones that make me alarmingly staticky. I cannot wait for November. At this point, I would settle for October. Anyway.

✨✨✨

Killing Commendatore by Haruki Murakami

rating: ⭐⭐⭐

This book was far too long for the amount of plot, and the women were written poorly. But—I've said it before and I'll say it again—if an author can string me along for 500+ pages with no plot, just vibes, that means the writing is good.

Colorless Tsukuru Tazaki and His Years of Pilgrimage by Haruki Murakami

rating: ⭐⭐⭐⭐

I didn't review this book because I have too many feelings about it. This book does a really, really good job of portraying how it feels to lose friends and be lonely. I would recommend this book to people with friendship problems.

Class Action by Steven B Frank

rating: ⭐⭐⭐⭐

This is the best book that I know I'll never be able to convince anyone else to read. My hypothesis is that it was written for me specifically. It is just so good. If you are me

Also the author liked my goodreads review and I'm never going to get over that.

It's crazy how I am just so cool.

I'm Thinking of Ending Things by Iain Reid

rating: ⭐⭐⭐⭐

Scary and clever. The ending could have been better. I don't know, it just felt like the easy way out.

Norwegian Wood by Haruki Murakami

rating: ⭐⭐

This book is overhyped. It is just not that good. This is just a book about depressed women written by an author who cannot write women. My goodreads review says I am "scrupulously neutral" on this book, but that's a lie. I didn't really like it. I just wanted to make a joke about Brett Kavanaugh.

Brett Kavanaugh would probably enjoy this book.

Elektra by Jennifer Saint

rating: ⭐⭐⭐✨

Jennifer Saint is so good at writing okayish Greek mythology retellings. This is a book about angry women. It did inspire me to read the Oresteia. I haven't finished the Oresteia. So we'll see how that goes, because my opinion of the Oresteia will affect my opinion of this book. Elektra would have been ten times better if it had the courtroom drama in it.

Within These Wicked Walls by Lauren Blackwood

rating: ⭐⭐✨

This book was whatever. It was fine. It was creepy, but it had no atmosphere. The main character's mentor was abusive, but she didn't seem to internalize that he was a bad guy. Unkind men don't get redemption arcs until they actually become better people. There wasn't enough description of Ethiopian food in this allegedly Ethiopian-inspired book. I didn't hate it.

The Song of Achilles by Madeline Miller (rereread)

rating: ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

What is there to say that hasn't been said? This book is beautiful and heartbreaking. The setting is pretty. This book has everything. Madeline Miller is almost as cool as me.

Circe by Madeline Miller (reread)

rating: ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

Perhaps the better Madeline Miller book?? Circe is a girlboss to end all girlbosses. She is just so fun to read about. Idyllic setting. Beautiful and heartbreaking. I read this book in a day, even though I had already read it and therefore knew what was going to happen. It is just,,, so good.

This Is How You Lose the Time War by Amal El-Mohtar and Max Gladstone

rating: ⭐⭐⭐⭐

Very pretty but almost completely incomprehensible. Still, very pretty. And the characters talked about a different book (Travel Light by Naomi Mitchison) so I will be reading that book, and my opinion of it will affect my opinion of this book.

Democracy in America by Alexis de Tocqueville

rating: ⭐⭐⭐⭐

I will be posting an excruciatingly long review of this book shortly! But for now I will say that it was interesting and I liked it.

A Conspiracy of Truths by Alexandra Rowland (reread)

rating: ⭐⭐⭐⭐✨

Everything about this book is unique, thoughtful, and clever. I like it so much I bought it. Allow me to brag for a minute about the copy of this book I acquired. I bought it secondhand off the internet for, like, $8. And it had free shipping. And it is in very good condition. The dust jacket is so pretty, and the cover without the dust jacket looks very nice as well. A good arrangement all around.

The Plague by Albert Camus

rating: ⭐⭐⭐⭐

If you want to know what I think of this book, you can read my review. It was good. The book, I mean. Although I think my review was pretty solid as well.
